Pruning the roots: Pruning shrub and tree roots can be as easy as 1,2,3. There are three basic ways to go about it. The first way is by making the shrub or tree suitable for transplanting purposes. If not prepared adequately in advance it can result in shock to the shrub or tree. You can use a spade whhich has a sharpened edge to make a straight cut all across the perimeter of the shrub or the tree. The cut needs to be approximately 16 or even 18 inches away from the central stalk portion. This applies in the case of a small plant. For larger sized plants the cut would need to be further away. The second stage is all about allowing the plant to develop brand new roots and regain all its lost energy and vitality. For about a month or so, you will need to thoroughly put water and fertilize the plant adequately. If you intend on shifting the plant make sure to perform this pruning method at least 6 weeks in advance. After root pruning it is generally adviseable to provide a resting period of 1 year for the plant.

Root pruning is also great when you need to combat the condition of girdling. Girdling refers to a condition where a large root lying underground is growing over the surface of other roots instead of downwards into the soil as it should be. Girdling can easily be detected. If for example you see the trunk appearing to navigate right down into the soil, instead of spreading itself outwards, it is a sure sign of girdling. Girdling roots will suffocate other healthy roots and hence need to be taken out as soon as possible. The leaves can become yellow because of inadequate oxygen, the growth becomes weaker and eventually results in the death of the tree.

The process of weeding: Mulching is generally a much more popular process preferred by gardeners as opposed to weeding. However, at times weeding is an absolute necessity. When small plants are just about to grow, weeds may need to be pulled out because they can suffocate these small plants. Thus before you even proceed to smear the summer mulch, make sure to pull out all weeds from the soil. Also be careful not to damage plants from repeatedly walking on them. If you feel there is sufficient need to protect plants, you can run to the local hardware store and buy a 4×8 sheet of luan or any other 1/4″ plywood to lay it down where you will be walking. This will minimize the compaction of the soil and maybe avoid harming your trees or other plants.

Insects in the garden: Pests can be avoided even without the usage of regular pest control methods. Even simple garden tactics can keep these creatures at bay. Fresh air and loads of space, coupled with ensuring dry conditions, prevention of moisture accumulation, as well as placing the plants in the sun etc. will ensure pest free environments. Backyard ponds are great additions to any landscaping garden. The pond immediately becomes a focal point for anyone who sees your yard. Your kids will love the pond, especially if there are fish.

Don’t despair if you think that a pond will take way too much work to create. Of course, certain types of ponds with intricate rock waterfalls will be tough to make, but you can create simpler ones with much less effort. Even a simple water feature will add beauty to your garden. The sound and sight of the water is truly soothing. Simplicity is key. A pond that is too cluttered is takes away some of the relaxing effect. When designing a pond, you need to find a place for the water to fall to, so it does not sit still. Also, you need to create a reservoir for this water to collect.

Having the waterfall will add a relaxing sound and keep the flow moving. The reservoir will hold the water that falls. It must be deeper than two feet. Any reservoir over two feet is considered a swimming pool, so you need to make sure the local regulations allow for something like that.

You can build the sides of the reservoir with a fiberglass shell, or with rubber liners.

Adding fish and aquatic plants will make your pond seem more natural. A water lily is a common plant to add in ponds. Also, they look nice and they help to balance out the ecosystem.

You can cover the pond with landscaping gravel to help the aquatic plants live. This is possible because microorganisms hat release carbon dioxide live in the spaces between the gravel, and the plants need carbon dioxide to live.

Plants, in turn, release oxygen. The microorganisms and fish need the oxygen that is released from the plants. You can see clearly how the ecological cycle works. Adding plant life to your pond will also help it blend into the surroundings.

You will need a water supply constantly to maintain a pond, especially if you want fish. Before you create your pond, you should calculate how much water you will need. There is an easy way to calculate this. First, figure out the square footage of the pond. Then, multiply the area by depth (in feet), to get the volume in cubic feet. Next, multiply the result (cubic feet) by 7.5 to get the final answer of number of gallons of water that you will need for your pond.

If you don’t mind a little bit extra work to make your pond look more interesting, you can create a step-by-step cascade of water from the pond to the reservoir. It will add a more interesting look to the pond and create a more tropical backyard. An electrical pump can keep the water circulating, but keep in mind that you will have to add more water from time to time because of evaporation.

Avoiding Fruit Tree Disease

Virtually any garden design can be improved by the inclusion of a fruit tree, or, if you have the space, a number of fruit trees. Fruit trees can produce the most amazing displays when in blossom and, of course, you have the advantage of it bearing edible fruit later in the year. If you are in the process of designing a garden and it includes a fruit tree, such as a plum tree, which produces pitted fruit it will be necessary for you to investigate ways in which to avoid disease as these types of tree are prone to be susceptible to disease.

Brown Rot is rather a common disease seen on fruit, especially fruit which has fallen from the tree and been left on the ground. This fruit tree disease can be rather difficult to eradicate as it is a fungus and as such produces a very large amount of spores. These spores are incredibly small and can travel a surprising distance and once it appears on fallen fruit it can quickly spread to the main plant and will, eventually, appear on the fruit still on the tree.

Luckily fungus needs specific conditions in which to thrive. The usual places where fungus establishes itself are damp, dark places where the air often remains stagnant. One of the best ways to reduce the risk of fungal infection appearing on your fruit tree is to prune it properly and regularly.

Fruit trees should be pruned to create an open structure so that the fresh air can flow freely throughout the leaves and branches. Not only does such pruning help reduce the risk of fungal infection it can also ensure that the sunlight reaches all parts of the tree. By ensuring that all leaves get the maximum amount of sunshine helps to make the tree stronger and more able to withstand and fight off infection and disease.

As well as pruning our fruit tree to avoid fungal infection and disease it is extremely important to continually monitor it for any signs of disease. One of the most important things to remember is that you must remove, isolate and destroy (by burning) any part of the tree that appears to have fungus. It is also strongly advised that you clear up any fallen fruit as soon as you see it and do not allow it to stay on the ground to rot, that’s asking for trouble!

Another fungal disease that can appear on a fruit tree is cytospora canker. Cytospora canker shows itself as dark patches of soft material on the branches of a tree. A large callus can form from which a substance, looking somewhat similar to gum, oozes from the bark. Usually cytospora canker appears close to or right on an old wound a it is during the healing process that it becomes infected by the pathogen.

Because cytospora canker is a fungus the approach to preventing the onset or spread of the disease is very much the same as how we deal with Brown Rot. Pruning our fruit tree is really the best way in which we can protect it but, of course, if pruned correctly, your fruit tree will produce far more fruit than without pruning.

The two fungal diseases mentioned above, Brown Rot and cytospora canker, are but two of a number of different diseases which can infect a fruit tree. Fungal infections can be very problematic and even professional landscape gardeners can find themselves in some difficulty when trying to combat such a disease. Of course providing the correct amounts of water, sunlight and nutrients can greatly help a tree to grow healthy and strong.
