house plants and fertilizer often do not mix well

Posted by Thomas Fryd

by Thomas Fryd

The most popular type of plants for indoor gardening are tropical plants. They work so well because they are beautiful, easy to care for, and drought tolerant.

Tropical plants are used to sandy soil, which naturally drains well. Because of this, it is important that you give the same conditions in your pots. Using loamy soil with pebbles embedded in it is a good option. There should be at least one hole at the bottom of the pot to help with drainage. To keep the soil in while letting water out, you can cover the hole(s) with wire mesh. If the mesh is too small, however, it will clog up.

It is easy to water your tropical plants. They don’t need very much water. In fact, in the winter a ZZ plant may be able to go two months with no water. The tropics have a hot, dry season followed by a very moist, wet rainy season. They can do fine, therefore, with long waits between waterings. It is fine to allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

The plants don’t need much fertilizer. Providing it with a low nitrogen fertilizer will help for most species. Micro-nutrients are more important, however. These chemicals are essential for your plant. It is similar to fertilizer, but the plant needs just a very small amount of the micro-nutrients to be healthy.

Typical fertilizer has more common nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These help to provide healthy leaf and stem growth, root strength, and bountiful flowers and fruit. Micro-nutrients, on the other hand, are elements like manganese, magnesium, calcium, and copper. They are important for plant health, but not in very large quantities.

Fertilizer made for houseplants have different mixtures of the 3 main elements. They are measured in numbers such as 30-10-10, meaning there is three times as much nitrogen as phosphorus or potassium. You need to find which mixture works best for the specific plants you are growing.

Although not a lot of water is necessary for tropical plants, plenty of sunlight is essential. If plants are placed to close to a window though, the greenhouse effect can cause the leaves to receive too much sun. In addition, the soil can overhead, which will harm the roots. In general though, a moderate amount of sunlight is needed - just don’t overdo it.

Most tropical plants naturally like warmth, but some species can handle cold weather. You should choose these varieties if you live in a climate that gets cold and the plant will be on a porch or near a window in the winter. The peace lily, spider plant, and wintergreen or Monique varieties of ficus all can survive some cold temperatures. Some versions of the ficus, such as Midnight, can do well in lower light as well. It cannot survive low light and cold though. Warmth is necessary for this variety.

garden sheds

Posted by Spencer Wilkins

by Spencer Wilkins

When you are trying to choose the right kind of garden sheds for your home you will need to take a number of different things into consideration. So you should therefore take your time and look at each shed carefully to ensure that it meets all of your requirements. In this article, we look at some of things that you need to be taking into consideration before you spend any money.

Because sheds are made from a number of different materials now, it is a good idea to select one that you feel is going to fit in with its surroundings. Also, you need to further consider the costs that are involved in helping to maintain the shed after it has been installed. You can choose from those that are made from wood, metal or PVC.

Although wooden ones can blend well into the garden environment, they are often the most expensive ones to purchase. Plus you need to factor in the cost of actually maintaining them otherwise over time the wood can become susceptible to the weather and begin to rot, warp or split. If you want, your shed to remain in the same condition that it was when first constructed you will need to regularly treat it with a wood preservative or varnish.

Many people today are now actually preferring to buy those sheds that are made from either PVC or metal. Simply because not only are they much easier and quicker to assemble, but they are generally a lot cheaper to buy in the first place. Plus as many have already discovered they require little or no maintenance once, they have been installed.

As well as selecting what material the shed is going to be constructed from, you need to decide what its function in the garden is going to be. Why buy a large shed if all it will be used for is storing all your garden implements when they are not required.

Along with deciding upon the size of shed, you need to decide on the assembly design. You can either select those that are preassembled and which are just dropped on to the base where the shed will stand. The other choices you have are to buy a garden shed kit or you build your own from scratch. The advantage of the shed kit is that all the parts have been pre-cut and you just need to assemble it using the materials that are supplied with it.

Most people today prefer to go for those that come in kit form, simply because not only are they cheaper to buy. But also, as you will discover for yourself they are very quick and easy to assemble once you have got them home.

Also, before you actually buy any garden sheds it is a good idea to check with the local building authority to find out whether you need any building approval to erect them. Plus it is a good idea to check with your neighbours (if you want to remain in their good books) that they have no objections as to where you are going to be placing your shed.

spider plants - the teachers pet

Posted by Kent Higgins

by Kent Higgins

If you are looking into a new kind of houseplant for your home, the Spider plant is a great option. They are easy to care for and they naturally grow well in the conditions that homes offer them. For this reason, they are often used by teachers to explain how to grow and care for plants. If you are just getting into gardening, they are the perfect plant to start with. They should be grown in containers or hanging baskets.

Propagation:

Spider plants naturally create stalks that grow out from the plant. At the end of the stalks are small, baby spider plants. If you remove these babies from the stalk, you can place the roots in water to begin the propagation process. Once the roots get to be at least an inch long, you can transplant the new spider plant into a pot with potting soil.

Another option is to move the baby spider plant into soil while it is still attached to the stalk. It should be held in place by a string or stake. Once the new plant’s roots take hold, you can clip it off from the main plant. You now have two individual spider plants. This method is healthier than the plant than the first method described.

The original spider plant will not produce the baby plants until it become root bound. So, if you want to propagate more spider plans, do not plant the first one in a pot that is too big.

Because of the ease and speed of propagation, you can have a houseful of spider plants if you wish. All of this is possible beginning with the one, mother plant.

If you do not want new plants, you can simply let the plants stay on the stalk, and they will look beautiful attached to the original plant. This is especially true if they are allowed to hang down from a hanging basket.

Care and Maintenance:

It is simple to care for spider plants. They need soil that is rich in nutrients. The pot needs to have a good drainage system. Constantly wet soil is bad for the plants. To be sure they get enough nutrients, they should be given liquid fertilizer once or twice per month. Use half of the recommended strength though, because the plants are sensitive to fertilizer.

They should be watered once per week, but never fully soak the soil. If you give them too much fertilizer or water, the tips of the leaves will turn brown. If you cut off the brown leaves, the plant will replace the old leaves with new, healthy ones. Hard water can also make the leaves turn brown. If this happens to you, try using distilled water.

One big plus in caring for a spider houseplant is they don’t need constant light to grow well. They do fine in low light areas, as long as they get a good dose of sunlight once or twice per week. They need indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can be bad for them. Placing them near a window with reflected light is very good for them.

If you place them by a window in the winter, make sure you don’t leave them too close to it for long. If the window is not insulated well, the cold temperatures will be too much for the plant to handle. Although cold temperatures are bad for the spider plants, they can handle cool temperatures without a problem.

Spider plants are a great option for your home because they are easy to care for and look great. In addition, they help keep the air quality clean. Having a fleet of spider plants in your home will help to filter out toxins. The plants will last a very long time, and the baby plants make great gifts for friends.

How To Get Green Lawns During The Whole Year

Posted by Andrew Caxton

by Andrew Caxton

This article tells you how to get green grass in your lawns throughout the year.

How to retain the greenery in your garden

Caring for the lawn becomes a pain during the summer. there arec certain factors you simply need to keep intact for the grass to look healthy. The amount of water provided, the nutrition level required, the sunlight and the type of plants and their suitability to the environment are big factors that need due consideration.

The maintenance should allow nutrients level to be retained in the soil so that the grass grows consistently. Proper watering is necessary and so is aerating and mowing your yard. This will provide that greener look for your lawns.

While you are doing this, also check the location at which the grass is growing. Grass would be greener if it gets enough sunlight although too much of sunlight could also be harmful. If there is too much shade, you need to crop the branches to make way for sunlight. This will catalyze the greening process.

One of the things that you need to keep in mind is the number of people actively using the lawn. The more the number of people in the higher the chances that their lawn may be difficult to maintain. On the other hand, you need to check the level of oxygen in the grass is intact. too much activity on the grass reduces this and causes the grass to wither away in a short duration of time. If you notice that that flat patches on the lawn, then you need to aerate the lawn. However you also need to avoid doing this during the summer time as the grass cannpt really take this. Its better to do this during spring or better still during fall.

Regular watering helps in retaining the moisture in the soil. While watering thesoild take care that it is not in the noon as the water evaporates faster during this time. Again, it is better to water the whole area rather doing it in patches. You may want to consider installing an irrigation system instead of doing it manually but this depends on the size of your garden. ‘Not too dry not too wet’ should be the thumb rule to follow. Always water the plants during morning or evening times. This is one great way of having lush green grass.

The quality of the soild will also determine the level of growth and greenness of the grass. It is important to maintain the right pH factor balance. If this is not in the right proporytion, you need to add fertilizers and manure to increase the nutrition levels. You may have to determine what fertilizer works with the type of the soil in your compound and get an analysis done by the local laboratory. Alternately, you could ask your neighbors if they have tried using fertilizers.

Once the nutrients are supplied, it all boils down to the maintenance part. You need to keep the right length by regularly mowing the lawn. This ensures that the grass gets enough water and sunlight to grow and shine.

In sum, nutrition and proper maintenance of the lawn should do the trick for you. In case this is still not working, you need to bring in professionals to provide you expert advice.

House Plants - More Adaptable Than You May Think

Posted by Keith Markensen

by Keith Markensen

It is difficult (and would probably be uncomfortable for you) to try to modify the temperature of your home to meet the needs of your plants. Instead, it is best to choose the plants that naturally survive in the environment that your home can offer.

It may be tough to grow plants like begonias, primroses, and geraniums indoors. They grow best in cool temperatures (between 50 and 60 degrees F). If you have a patio that is cooler, this could be a good spot for plants like these.

Plants like the African Violet do best in warmer, room temperatures of 70-80 degrees F.

To save energy, the temperature in most homes drops significantly at night. Your plants can probably handle this drop without a problem, unless it is exceptionally extreme. You would probably not be comfortable if it were that cold, though. Plants are used to a drop of about 10-15 degrees at night, since this happens in the wild when the sun goes down. If the drop is 25-30 degrees in your house, you should protect the plants with a newspaper or burlap tent until it warms up in the morning.

It is important that you make sure your windows are well insulated. If not, the temperature right by the window will too cold for the plants if it is cold outside. It is also possible for drafts to leak through. Be sure to move plants away from the windows at night if there is poor insulation.

Overheating can be a problem as well. In the winter, the air is typically quite dry. When you heat your home, it takes even more humidity out of the air. Moisture is extremely important to plants, so the low humidity can be harmful. Plants get water from the air, similarly to how they take it in from the roots. This is often overlooked.

You can compensate for the dry air by buying a humidifier for your home to add moisture. If you would rather choose a cheaper option, you can attach evaporating pans to the radiators. Make sure you keep the pans filled with water.

In addition to either of these two options, it is good to spray the foliage with water a couple times per week. This will give the foliage the moisture that the lack of humidity takes away. Also, it will clean the dust off of the leaves, and keep insects away, even with easy to care for indoor house plants it’s a good idea to keep moisture around them. If your plants have hairy leaves, you should not spray them because they will get white spots and be more likely to decay.

As long as you care for your plants in a reasonable manner, they should be able to adapt to changes in the environment of your home.

Buying A Childrens Playhouse

Posted by Spencer Wilkins

by Spencer Wilkins

As all parents will tell you children love the chance of having playhouses. Today you have the choice of either going for a prefabricated style of playhouse or you can go for one, which is actually custom made. But whichever style of playhouse you choose for your child you will soon see just how much fun they have with it.

When looking to buy a wooden playhouse for your child or children there are a number of different places where you can get them from. If you want go and take a look at your local garden center or DIY store to see what ones they have. But if you want to get something a little more unusual or bespoke then searching online is a great place to find what you are looking for.

When looking to buy a playhouse for your child there are certain things that need to be taken into consideration and below we take a look at just what these are. One of the first things you need to think about is where in your garden it is going to be located.

It is best if you place it somewhere that the child can easily have access to it and if being built for young children in a place that you have good views of it. Also if you can ensure that you place it in a position in the garden where it is going to get lots of sunlight.

Should you be selecting to have a custom-made playhouse built in your garden it is wise to check with your local authority if you need permission to do so. Generally, most playhouses are no more than 100 square feet in size and do not require any building permits. But anything above this size may well require such permits so it is best to be safe than sorry.

When selecting what size playhouse you are getting for your child choose one that will meet all their needs as they grow older. Certainly going for the custom made rather than prefabricated style offers you more chance to select a design and size that meets your child’s requirements perfectly.

After deciding on what size playhouse you want built you next need to decide on the design. At this stage of the selection process it would be a good idea to ask your child what kind of playhouse it is that they want. They may want something that is very simple or they may choose to go for something that looks a little more elaborate such as one that looks like a castle or pirate ship.

So be warned because there are so many different styles of playhouses to choose from actually deciding which is best may take longer than you would have first expected. If you keep in mind what we have mentioned above then you will be able to find one that not only your child likes but meets your budgetary requirements also.

Lawn Fertilizer - What Do The Numbers Mean?

Posted by Gary Antosh

by Kent Higgins

There are sixteen essential elements that your lawn needs in order to stay alive and healthy. Many of them are naturally given to the lawn, but you need to be responsible for supplying the other elements. You can do this by adding fertilizer that includes nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus.

You can’t just give the lawn any fertilizer with these, though. You need to make sure it has the proper amount of each element. To know this, you have to understand what each one does for your plants.

Nitrogen is the most important element for your lawn. It is the element that causes the grass to grow. In addition, it makes the grass green. It makes the blades of grass thicker and stronger, making it easier to fight off pests.

Potassium helps to immunity of your lawn. It will help it to resist disease, drought, cold weather, and other hardships.

Phosphorus is used to make the roots of the grass stronger. Most fertilizers have all three of these necessary elements., but they are made with different combinations of them. If you read, 30-10-10 on the package, for example, it means that the mixture contains 30 percent nitrogen, 10 percent phosphorus, and 10 percent potassium.

There is not just one correct combination to use. There are a variety of factors that can influence which is best. Higher potassium is good to use right before winter, for example. The grass type, climate, season, and soil type are all important to consider when choosing a mixture.

Another way to figure out which mixture you need is to take a simple pH test, so you know what the current levels of the elements are in your lawn.

These different combinations of elements are available in different kinds of fertilizers, including granular both slow and fast-release, organic, liquid and synthetic.

Granular fertilizers are the easiest to use, and are therefore the most popular. It is a dry fertilizer, making it easy to spread. The slow release version can last anywhere from two to six months. It is convenient to have so much time available before you need to apply fertilizer again.

The fast release version is best for cold weather. You will have to be careful to avoid grass burn with this, however. Watering more often will help to fight this.

Liquid fertilizer for lawns needs to be mixed with water before use, because they come concentrated. You can apply the fertilizer by attaching a hose and nozzle to a spray bottle. It is pretty simple to do. The biggest advantage of liquid fertilizers is that the nutrients get right to the roots immediately. You can even mix in herbicides to the fertilizer to do tow jobs at once.

Because of how quickly the liquid fertilizer works, you will have to re-apply more often than you would with the other fertilizer types. Liquid fertilizers can cost you more money, but if you need a way to give nutrients quickly, it could be worth it. Synthetic fertilizers are chemically manufactured, and release nutrients immediately into your lawn. They get through the soil and too the roots quickly, making your grass green. If they are not applied correctly, your lawn can become burnt. Also, the applications do not last very long, so you will have to reapply often. Although synthetic fertilizers work well, they are not natural, which bothers some people.

For a natural alternative, you can use organic fertilizers. They are made from organic material from animals, and are applied using spreaders, rakes, or by hand. The nutrients are broken down and used slowly. The texture, density, and overall health of your lawn will be improved, but this comes at the cost of the smell if it contains manures.

There are many things to consider when choosing which fertilizer to use. You need to know your lawn, it?s current condition, and what it needs to handle the season. You should also take cost and ease of application into account, if those things are important to you.

Brandon Flowers

Posted by Bobbie McKee

by Bobbie McKee

By merely listening to a track of David Bowie entitled “Changes”, Brandon Flowers realized that he wanted to be part of the music industry. He was born in Las Vegas, Nevada but was later raised in Nephi, Utah. Growing up as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- ay Saints, he is the youngest among six siblings. With only one older brother and the rest as girls, he attributed much of his fashion style to his sisters. By the age of fifteen, he was permitted by his parents to go back to his native place and live together with his aunt.

When Brandon Flowers encountered a fellow fan in a golf course who also knew how to play an instrument, they decided to form their own group which they named Blush Response. It is a synth pop outfit that took its domicile in Los Angeles, California. Their career was short lived though, since Flowers was booted out in 2001 when he refused to change location. He did not sing for them, instead he performed with keyboards. Their original composition “The Victim” was part of the Various Artist collection called “Electricity” under the label of Ninthwave Records. However, it remained anonymous that Flowers had a role during its recording.

The event did not stopped Brandon Flowers in pursuing his dreams. When he noticed a classified of David Keuning in a local daily, he made an immediate response by contacting the number found on the advertisement. According to Keuning, Flowers was the only individual who made a reply and not a complete freak. He also said that Flowers brought along his keyboards and they started to go through some songs together. At that instant, they were able to compose a song entitled “Mr. Brightside”, which is the only track that they present in every single show they had. Since then, “The Killers” was born together with other members such as Mark Stoermer on bass and Ronnie Vannucci on drums.

Brandon Flowers with his newly established band, The Killers, had some of their early gigs at a gay drag club in Las Vegas. They were inspired by New Order’s music video for “Crystal” where they derived their identity. After the times spent in bars, word about them soon spread to the extent that they captured the attention of a British music label called Lizard King. It was that avenue where they made their entry to United Kingdom, their first tour outside the United States. Those who saw their act left unanimously enamored while their subsequent appearance at New York inked a deal with Island Records. From there, the four boys set on foot once more as they sold out their own headline shows including a full Valentine’s Day affair at ICA in London.
