Harness Sun Energy With Solar Powered Garden Lighting

Posted by Keith Markensen

by Keith Markensen

Gardening is an American pastime, and interest in it is growing rapidly. People are recognizing how much nice plants and landscaping will help the appearance of their home. It also is an enjoyable hobby to cultivate plants from seed to maturity in your own backyard garden. Adding decorative touches like stepping stones, fountains, or solar garden lighting can show your personal style.

With solar lighting in your garden, you can light a path, or highlight certain plants or features. The best part about it is that it does not need any external power. No chords or anything at all. Just like your plants, it will use the sun’s energy to power itself.

A solar garden light is made up of a plastic shell with a solar cell inside. It also has a nickel and cadmium battery, a control board, an LED light source, and a photo resistor.

The sun charges the battery, which powers the solar cell. The control board and the light itself is powered by these. At night, the battery can’t charge since the sunlight is gone, so the photo resistor turns on the LED. The LED can run for about 15 hours on a charged battery.

Outdoor electrical wiring can be a hassle to install, especially if your garden is not right next to your home. The solar lighting can easily fix that. It will cost more at first to install the solar lighting, but the money that will be saved in electric bills will more than make up for it.

You can chose the style, shape, and color of the lighting based upon your personal taste and the style of the rest of your garden. Plastic dome lighting is common, for example. This type is used most often for pathways or borders. There are spikes on the bottom so you can simply stick the lights into the ground.

Other shapes that are available include tubes, discs, lanterns, tiki torches, and globes. Besides putting them in the ground, you can mount some on your home or deck, or hang them on poles, etc. The number of options is amazing.

Light can add a really special quality to your garden, especially if you use the area to entertain friends and family in the evenings.

In addition to working well and looking great, landscape solar garden lights are good for the environment and your electricity bill. The lights are a great investment that will last.

Choosing The Right Gardening Equipment

Posted by Dave Truman

by Dave Truman

Gardening equipment is something every gardener needs. At least that’s what we all say when we rush off to buy that handy new extra-light shovel that just went on sale! However, not every gardener has all the tools, or even the right ones necessary, and most gardeners will just make do with what they have. Most of the time improvisation is the key.

But if you are serious about growing a garden this year, there are several things you absolutely need to have. A shovel, a hoe and a rake are three of the basics. Pruning scissors are another valuable tool that you should add to your arsenal as soon as you can.

Over the year, I’ve amassed quite a collection of equipment, to the point of not having room for them all in my shed. But out of all those tools, my favorites are an old pair of comfortable gloves and my trusty kitchen knife.

If my pruning scissors aren’t handy, the kitchen knife takes their place quite well. If my shovel and hoe aren’t within reach, the tip of the knife usually does the job. And sometimes I don’t even go that far and just use my hands to dig the soil.

It probably sounds like a fairly sloppy way to go about your gardening, but every dedicated gardener knows that if you’re knee deep in the middle of something, the last thing you’ll want to do is to interrupt your work to fetch the proper gardening equipment from your shed.

Having said all that, some jobs really are easier with the proper equipment and it may be worth the time to fetch. One of my other favorites is the garden claw.

With two varieties available, one for standing work, and for closer work and therefore fitting in your hand, the garden claw makes your life easier. Stick the claw in the ground, give it a simple twist with your wrist, and pull out. It loosens soil easily, and as an added benefit you get to pull out your weeds with less hassle.

What you need to remember about garden equipment is while you might really want a piece of equipment, you probably don’t really need it. Stick with the basics and you’ll still have lots of fun and enjoyment from your garden.

House Plant Classics - Natures Powerful Masterpieces

Posted by Keith Markensen

by Keith Markensen

Sometimes it is best to look to the past for inspiration in style, rather than always trying to find the next best thing. In gardening, for example, the Victorian era has a unique, unmatched, classic style that is often overlooked today. Their style is certainly worth replicating.

Many of the plants from that era can fit easily on a window sill. The Boston fern, for example, is easy to care for and is becoming popular again with window gardeners. It has evergreen foliage and needs indirect sunlight for healthy growth. It works well to have Boston ferns in a hanging pot, so you will need a pot one inch bigger than he one the fern came in, some potting soil, and a plant hook to hang the pot.

After you transfer the Boston fern to the larger pot and fill it in with fresh potting soil, you should make sure that the soil is packed tight. Watering the plant thoroughly will remove any remaining air pockets. When you install the plant hook, make sure you are properly install it and that it can hold the weight of the pot, plant, and wet soil. All that is left to do is hang the plant, water it when the soil is dry, an rotate it occasionally.

Another Victorian style houseplant that you could use in your home is the spider plant. They are strong plants that have green or green and white foliage. You can choose whether you want the graceful appearance that comes from allowing the baby plants to grow, or the sleek appearance that results from removing the baby plants.

The cactus is another classic plant that is great in homes. There are so many varieties of cacti. To truly make a visual impact, don’t be afraid to put 5 or more cacti in an area. Cacti are very hardy plants, so they are easy to care for. You can plant them in a big rectangular box that runs the length of your window sill. The soil should be made specifically for cactus plants. After that, simply remember to not water the plants very often. Overwatering can kill cacti, since their natural habitat is the dry desert.

The African Violet is another great option. It is a simple plant with velvety rounded leaves. The center of the plant contains a group of small flowers. There are many different varieties of African Violets, so you can have the option of picking your favorites and grouping them together.

Once the interior of your window is full of flowers, you may not feel fulfilled. In this case, you can build a window box outside the window to plant more flowers in. Geraniums work very well here. They do not live through the winter, however.

Classic house plants and houseplant care have stood the test of time, so don’t forget to acknowledge their beauty. It is not always best to follow every single current trend in style.

Garden Window Making House Plant Care A Breeze

Posted by Kent Higgins

by Kent Higgins

With the white snow and grey skies of winter, a nature lover can become depressed. Placing houseplants in a window garden are a great remedy to these winter blues.

Hanging plants are great options for the window gardens because they save space. You will need to install a plant hook for each hanging plant. Spider plants, Boston ferns, and Chenille plants are some examples of plants that work well hanging. Instead of keeping the plants in the plastic containers you bought them in, you should plant them into bigger, decorative, and stronger pots. The plants will look nicer and be healthier.

It can be difficult to choose which windowsill plants to choose. If you won’t have much time to care for the plants, some good choices are African violets, peace lilies, and ivy. There are many varieties of each of these as well. You can choose those based on color and personal taste.

If you want a bit more control over when your plants bloom, you can use bulbs. You can force the bulbs to sprout earlier in the spring to add color to your home sooner. Forcing is done by chilling the bulbs for a few months in a refrigerator. Four to Six weeks after planting the bulbs, with proper watering, the plants will sprout.

If you are looking for an exotic look, orchids are a great option. Don’t be scared off by their reputation of being tough to grow. They are actually quite easy to take care of. The Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum, and cattleya orchids are a few of the simplest varieties to grow. With the Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilum varieties, it is easy to get the bold flowers to rebloom. It is a bit more difficult to sustain the small flowers of the Cattleya, however.

You will need a clay pot, a tray, and pebbles for your orchids. The orchid should be planted in a fresh potting mix in the clay pot. You then need to run warm temperature water over the orchid for two minutes. You should allow it to drain fully because standing water often kills orchids. Cover the bottom of the tray with pebbles and place it on the window sill. The orchid can then be put on the tray. Check the potting mix once per week to see if it is dry. If so, water it as described earlier in this paragraph.

If even the simple plants to care for are too much for you, growing plants in a terrarium will definitely work for you. There is pretty much no way to go wrong. To make a terrarium, you need a container with a lid, sand, potting soil, and some tropical plants or ferns. The bottom of the container should be filled with three inches of sand. A few inches of soil should be poured on top of that.

Dig out an area in the soil for each plant. Place the plants in the terrarium and fill in the hollow areas with more potting soil. Moisten the soil with a few tablespoons of water. You will never have to water the terrarium again. Put the lid on the container and place it somewhere out of direct sunlight. The terrarium will create it’s own moisture to water the plants. If too much condensation is developing, simply open the lid a bit to let it breathe some.

Caring for house plants and getting them to grow during the winter will help liven up the spirit of your home by adding some life and color.

How To Decorate Your Deck

Posted by Adam Peters

by Adam Peters

Choosing the right material for your deck can be a bit confusing, considering your safety and comfort. So making the right choice is important. This article will guide you through the process.

Decorating your deck can be a simple job, only if you have a little knowledge about the accessories available in the market.

Basically, the deck is a place where one can enjoy the open air, with an unblocked view of the outdoors. So it is important that it has that right look to create the ambiance for one to feel relaxed. So to give your deck a finished look and at the same time create a comfortable ambience or a private garden look, it is important to decorate it with ornamental touches, and one such accessory is the box deck flower railing. Box deck flower railings can be constructed from various materials, but PVC or vinyls are some of the most favorite materials. PVC is preferred over other materials as it is considered safe and durable. A PVC constructed box deck railing is comparatively safer, because it does not splinter like wood and thus have no sharp points and edges, which means the chances of you getting hurt while gardening is nil. Another characteristic of PVC is that it is heat resistant, and so when exposed to direct heat of the sun, it fails to heat the material and thus reduce the chances of causing burn injury when you come in direct contact with the box deck flower railing, on a sunny day. PVC is also waterproof, and its resistance to ultra violet rays help it remain practically fresh and new for a longer period of time, which makes PVC the best option for box deck flower railing.

Another material that is commonly used in constructing a box deck railing system is wood. A deck with a beautifully decorated wooden box deck railing system would definitely give it a grand, classic look. Various types of woods can be used to construct the box deck flower railing, but the most preferred one is cedar wood. Cedar wood is basically termite and other insect proof and its capability to withstand extensive exposure to moisture, like in case of gardening makes it the best choice for box deck flower railings. The latest in wooden materials available for construction are composite woods, these are basically engineered wood products, which offer the beauty of wood and at the same time provide durability and strength. Composite wood is also very safe, as it is splinter proof and its insect and water resistant quality has made it one of the most favorite materials for constructing box deck flower railings.

Whether you living in a two-story building or a huge mansion, facing a huge estate, building a box deck flower DIY or railings will definitely contribute in adding beauty and class to your deck.

Kentucky Blue Grass - High Maintenance

Posted by Andrew Caxton

by Andrew Caxton

This article discusse the efforts and the problems associated with growing kentucky blue grass.

Have you heard of Kentucky blue grass? If not here is a perspective of this little known variety.

Kentucky blue grass is primarily found in Europe and northern Asia, Algeria and Morocco. The grass is now commonly seen the humid parts of the United States of America. However, it did not originate there. It reached here through the colonists who came from Europe. They brought the grass seed with them and planted it here. It now grows well in New England as well as the United States.

Kentucky bluegrass is now very well known in the United States. It grows one to two feet high. It is shaped like a boat shaped at the tips of the blades. The growing pattern of this grass variety changes throughout the year.

If you want to grow this grass variety, here are some tips. You will need around two pounds of seed to cover every 1,000 square feet area of land. It can be planted any time during the year. The best times are yielded in the fall or spring plantations. It needs to be watered a few times everyday until it sprouts. After this the frequency can be reduced.

The Kentucky bluegrass needs huge amount of water to remain healthy. It requires around two inches of water per week. This helps in keeping the grass green and healthy through out the summer. Usually it stops functioning and goes to sleep during winters. During this time very little water is required and it remains that way until the rains. This variety grows fast in the rains.

It also needs a lot of nitrogen feed during the entire year and one has to bear this in mind while considering growing this grass. If not this grass can wither away very easily. This is essentially a high maintenance grass. However, people are more interested in the beauty and so are ready to go that extra step and spend more.

You also need to keep this grass away from pests. It can easily get infected and get destroyed by pests like clover and dandelions. Insects enjoy this grass for food. That is another danger. Use germicides and fungicides to get rid of this situation. Regular inspection is required for this variety of grass.

As long as you understand the effort required to grow this grass and as long as you are fine with it, the Kentucky blue grass should be fun to grow to give that different look to your place.

Information About Natural Insecticides

Posted by SteveK

by SteveK

Did you know hot sauce mixed with garlic and water can chase away those annoying caterpillars who have been feeding on your precious plants? You may appreciate butterflies, but not their babies. So, maybe you just want them to relocate to another area. Many natural insecticides are used as repellents rather than as a way to kill insects.

Spider mites hate the mixture of hydrated lime (1/4 c.) and water (add a small drop of soap to help it stick). Be careful not to use too much or the lime could hurt your plants.

Many nature lovers use soap frequently to mix with their concoctions but even these are often washed away by rain and water sprinklers.

If you choose to use nicotine, be aware that it can be deadly as a concentrate to more than just those pesky aphids. It’s not only dangerous as harmful cigarette smoke, but it can be beneficial if used properly on plants. For us, the concentrates can cause convulsions and death. So, don’t let that toddler grab your supply by accident. It’s usually mixed with sulphur and is not recommended for use on edible plants.

Horticulture oils suffocate insects by covering them with an oily film. If that sounds barbaric, just think of the damage that can be done to crops and gardens and even humans by an overpopulation of insect pests. Insect pests can spread diseases and famine.

Homemade sprays can be a great economical alternative to bought sprays. You must know how to adequately measure, store, and use them even if they are homemade and seemingly harmless.

Variety is the secret to being successful as a natural pest controller. Sometimes several mixtures for different pests and weather conditions are necessary. Keeping in mind how your insect control may affect other creatures that you want in your garden is also something to be kept in mind.

While you don’t have to be scared of insects, you do have to be sensible to keep from becoming overrun with them. You should also be a responsible parent and teach your children how to safely combat insects. What your children learn can benefit the next generation. It helps to encourage their interests while they are young and willing to absorb what their parents have to say. Even if they seem to totally ignore all you’ve taught them as teenagers, they will many times come back to their senses as they grow older. One day, they’ll be sharing their insecticide information with their own children or grandchildren.
